Thursday 9th May
This is now week 3 and half way on our trip. Albuquerque is our next destination in New Mexico.
The roads are once again very straight and endless. We stopped at a service station which had an amazing car museum, not something you see on the M25!! Our new Airbnb is up to the usual standard. Wifi is brilliant and all TVs have Netflix and Amazon on. Breaking Bad tour tomorrow.
Friday 10th May
Today the Breaking Bad Tour in an old RV. For all those who have seen it this was an amazing tour. We even met the actor who played Combo.
Saturday 11th May
This is our last day in Albuquerque before we move to Durango, in the mountains of Colorado.
Today we visited a train museum to see a huge engine which is being restored by volunteers. Its a 1948 steam train powered by oil.
Next we took the tramway (cable car) up a mountain. Interesting cable car. Built by the Swiss in the 60s and goes up to 3200m with only one midway pylon. Huge expanses between – world’s longest I think.
Sunday 12th May
Off to Durango to our next (7th) Airbnb. The journey took 5 hours through stunning Colorado scenery which included snow capped mountains
Monday 13th May
Off on a long steam train ride today on the Durango – Silverton train. 45 miles through ever more scary vistas. It took 3 and a half hours to get to Silverton and 3 and a half hours to get back. Silverton was interesting, originally a mining town for Gold and Silver.
Tuesday 14th May
After a hectic day on the train yesterday we opt for an easy day buying a cowboy hat and going to a museum. The history of Durango is incredible, from Navaho and Ute Indians to Lawlessness and gunfights to gold and silver mining. There’s even a photo of a lynching!
Wednesday 15th May
We left Durango and drove the 6 hours to La Junta, also in Colorado. The journey was breathtaking, first of all through the Rocky Mountains over Wolf Creek Pass amid snow, and then across miles and miles of straight roads through desert.
Our new Airbnb is fantastic and cheaper than a motel:- spacious, 2 beds, 2 baths, utility room, excellent internet etc etc (£78 for one night). We are only staying one night as tomorrow we head for Dodge City in Kansas and our 4th week of the holiday.
