Week Two

FRIDAY 12th SEPTEMBER

Now into week 2. We have driven from Williams near the Grand Canyon and the comfort of our remote cabin to Las Vegas. On the way we visited the Hoover Dam. Amazing feat of engineering for the 1930s. The drought is really taking hold here though despite some storms. This is Lake Mead above the Dam. Only the dark areas should be above water. They say some Indian villages which were flooded when the Dam was built are now exposed. Hot here = 100F =38C

Into Vegas.  Never seen anything like it! Over the top in everything. On the walk back to the hotel we stumble on a group of car enthusiasts in the car park of the Hard Rock Hotel – brilliant.

SATURDAY 13th SEPTEMBER

A day in Vegas – 100F and scorching. The Mayweather fight causes chaos as does the celebrations for the anniversary of Mexican independence. We also went on the big wheel (biggest in the world  – of course!)

 SUNDAY 14th SEPTEMBER

We drive from Las Vegas to our remote cabin in the hills behind LA. A 6 and a half hour drive, mainly on dual carriageway through desert. Then on to the Freeways around LA. Difficult driving  – they come from both sides and sometimes there are 7 lanes each way! Now in our remote cabin up in the hills for recovery from Las Vegas! 3 Days here now chilling out.

 MONDAY 15th September

Just spent the day trying to find somewhere to buy groceries. Impossible! Within an hour’s drive all the shops we found only sold liquor, tinned and frozen stuff and of course fresh coffee. Vegetables NO meat NO!!! Still a good day to relax and recover from Vegas.

TUESDAY 16th SEPTEMBER

A day totally chilling (still recovering from Las Vegas!! – are we old?). I go for a hike but its in the forest and its eerily quiet and there are big poos on the trail. An hour is enough!! Tomorrow we head for a motel in Morro bay and then for the famous coast road to The Big Sur and our cabin in Carmel.

WEDNESDAY 17th SEPTEMBER

We leave our large and comfortable cabin in the hills behind LA. Sign of the times here that no-one is around and there are loads for sale. You can buy a luxury 2 bed 2 bath detached cabin for £100K.

The drive to the coast is interesting, mainly through desert. In an hour we only see 2 cyclists! Eventually to Morro Bay, which is covered in a sea fret. The temperature in the desert was 98F, here its 67F – some difference.

Amazing desert view
