2016 Week 4

Friday 30th September

After a 6 hour journey South to Maine in the US we arrived at our new home for the next 4 days. Its a cosy cottage close to another fishing village. This area seems much more affluent than the places in Canada we have been to.

We are on the coast again so why not go on a boat trip? We decided to go on the 2.5 hour trip around the bay, along the coast and back. It started off warm but ended up freezing! Nevertheless we saw lots of rich peoples summer houses, Seals, and numerous lighthouses. Apparently it was a Brit who founded this area: John Smith.

Saturday 1st October

Now settled in to our 4th Cabin. The weather was a little overcast but dry. Getting much cooler now but we read temperatures in the UK have been high for the time of year!!! Booooo!

Today we went to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens which had a harvest feel with lots and lots of pumpkins.

Sunday 2nd October

The plan today was to visit a lighthouse but on the way we found a brilliant museum – the Boothbay Railway Village. It had a steam train which we rode on, live rabbits!!, a vast car museum with over 50 cars, vintage fire engines etc etc. It was a family funday so mostly adults with kids – but who needs kids when you have Pauline posing on every machine going and with a live giant rabbit!!

We then went on to the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. We even ascended the short staircase to the top and clambered the rocks below

Monday 3rd October

A short drive and we are in our next and final cabin at Naples on Lake Sebago.

Tuesday 4th october

Fantastic day, the weather was great and we managed a 10 minute seaplane ride, a visit to the local park (deserted and with a massive beach on a lake), and a short canoe ride in the canoe belonging to the owners of the cabin. First photos of the amazing flight.

Next photos of the Sebago State Park which is centred around the huge Sebago Lake. It has a beach which is lovely and loads of picnic tables with attached BBQs. Today the place was deserted but lovely.

… then we went canoeing!!!

wednesday 5th october

A much quieter day today but still in warm lovely weather. A trip to the Zoo (Maine Wildlife Park) and a few bored animals then another canoe trip down the river.

Thursday 6th October

A short drive to the coast at Kennebunke, still in Maine. This is our last cabin and is part of a Motel complex, basically a series of garden sheds. But it is great, bedroom, living room, dining kitchen area and shower room. The wifi is the best we have experienced.

On the way we looked at the Wedding Cake house from 1826. Apparently the guy who owned it got married hastily as he had to go to sea. No time to have a wedding cake so he promised his wife he would make the house like a wedding cake – and he did!!

Friday 7th october

This is our last full day before we fly back tomorrow. We visited the Seashore Trolley Museum nearby, basically its a massive museum dedicated to Trolleys (Trams). Its great and includes a ride on a tram and you are able to clamber all over them which is fantastic. There is even a horse drawn tram dating back to 1855.

.. and then on to take a last look at the sea – in beautiful weather
